Merry Christmas-2016 ...

CHRISTMAS DAY

India is a secular country and every religious festival here is celebrated with equal gusto and enthusiasm. Christmas Day is celebrated on the twenty fifth day of December. It is an annual festival which commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ and is celebrated the world over.

Although there is no clear reason as to why December 25 is the date of celebration, there are several factors that may have influenced this choice. December 25 is the date chosen by the Romans as marking the winter solstice, and Jesus was identified with the Sun based on an Old Testament verse. The date is exactly nine months following the ‘Annunciation’ when the birth of Jesus is celebrated. Finally, the Romans had a series of pagan festivals near the end of the year, so Christmas may have been scheduled at this time to appropriate these festivals.

The celebration of Christmas, around the globe is diverse and sundry. It is done across a cross-section of people. Educational institutions, professional organizations and personal gaiety symbolize the Christmas time and are evident throughout December and not just on the twenty-fifth. A religious slant to the celebrations is that families visit churches and sing traditional Christmas carols. Many canonical literary texts such as “The Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens have been written centering on Christmas and the myths around it.
Spanning generations and clusters of decades, Christmas has come to represent hope, warmth, cheer, affection and exultation.

We hope that you are blessed with cheer and happiness and the power to spread it, especially in this disconsolate and dismal time which is witnessing a rapid dilapidation of core human values.

The Unique Team wishes you a merry Christmas!

Trump and India: blog by Unique Publishers

Donald Trump wins US election 2016

Donald Trump won the US presidential election on 8th November in a stunning victory that sent shock-waves around the world.

In his victory speech, Trump has promised that as the American president he will honour the pledge stitched into his white and red baseball caps, “Make America Great Again”.
Donald Trump captured crucial victories over Hillary Clinton in Florida, Ohio and North Carolina, showing strength in two of the nation’s most fiercely fought battleground states in a tight race for the presidency.

India’s relations with US
USA is India’s second-largest supplier of defence equipment, it is also one India’s most important trading partner (the India-US trade figures exceed $100 billion). India’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council also makes its relationship with USA vital in strategic terms.

Trump and India
In New Delhi’s political circles, the general belief is that Republican presidents are generally better for India than Democrats. However, Trump is hardly a typical Republican, having taken up foreign policy positions that conflict with the Republican ethos. On the other hand, India has had a long association with Hillary Clinton who is seen as someone who would be a good President to cater to India’s concerns.
Compared to Clinton, Trump has been more vocal on fighting terror. With an eye on garnering votes from the Indian-American community, Trump has made many comments about India during the last leg of his election campaign. He has also sent a message that under his administration, the US would talk tough with Pakistan on the issue of cross-border terrorism. However, while his statements hint at a tilt towards India, he has also said, “Pakistan is semi-unstable. We have a little bit of a good relationship. I think I’d try and keep it.”
Trump also has no experience of working at any level in the US administration. Hence, his ideas and capabilities on many issues, including foreign policy, are yet to be tested. Finally, Donald Trump’s soft approach towards Russia may propel him to revisit US policy towards China, something which can have serious security ramifications for India.

Modi's surgical strike on black money: blog by Unique Publishers

Modi’s surgical strike on black money

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on November 8, announced that 500 and 1,000 rupee notes will cease to be legal tender from now. The Prime Minister made a sharp reference to cross-border terror which was being funded by forged currency notes and emphasized that the decision was taken to curb the menace of black money and counterfeit currency. Existing currency notes of Rs 1, 2, 5, 10 and 100 denomination as well as coins will continue to be legal and can be used for buying and selling.

While most financial experts and India Inc. honchos said it was not unexpected, the timing of the announcement caught everyone by surprise. An obvious reason for this would be to ensure that unaccounted wealth is not siphoned off via other channels like gold or property. In his address, Modi asked people to exchange these notes for other denominations from November 10, 2016 till December 31, 2016. This can be done in banks and post-offices.
New Currency Notes:
However there are some other channels as well where denominations of 500 and 1000 can be used. Government hospitals will continue to accept old 500 and 1,000 notes for 72 hours. Similarly, rail, airline and government bus ticket counters, as well as milk booths, petrol pumps, consumer cooperative societies, crematoriums and burial grounds, and foreign currency exchange facilities at airports will accept these notes for the next 72 hours. Transactions through debit and credit cards, cheques and demand drafts will continue as usual.
Chart sheet of cash withdraw & deposit dates is given below:

There will be a cap on ATM withdrawals from 2,000 per day on one card. This will be raised to 4,000 in the coming days. New 500 and 2,000 notes will also be issued on November 10 and will be available for use to the general public.
